2022 NFL Draft: Second Round
Mock Draft and Analysis By: Gregg Schutze
as of April 27, 2022
33. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jaquan Brisker, 6’1”, 199lbs, S, Penn State, Jr.
04/07/22 - Tyler Smith, OT, Tulsa
The Jags could use a versatile safety to pair with Rayshawn Jenkins.
34. Detroit Lions – Daxton Hill, 6’0”, 191lbs, S, Michigan, Jr.
04/07/22 - Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina
Lions could take Hill in Round 1, but would be great value here. Hill would give the Lions a versatile chess piece on the back end of the defense to pair with Tracy Walker. His cover skills will allow him to play some in the slot as well.
35. New York Jets – Kaiir Elam, 6’1”, 191lbs, CB, Florida, Jr.
04/07/22 - Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida
The Jets target a CB to pair with DJ Reed on the outside. Kaiir Elam has been somewhat forgotten in this draft class, but has good size, length and ball skills.
36. New York Giants – David Ojabo, 6’4”, 250lbs, OLB, Michigan, Jr.
04/07/22 - Breece Hall, RB, Iowa State
The Giants are desperate for pass rush help and if they don't use a 1st Round pick on Kayvon Thibodeaux or Jermaine Johnson II, David Ojabo would be a heck of a consolation price. Once thought of as a top 15 pick, Ojabo's draft stock took a hit with the torn Achilles. However, with the way Cam Akers returned from his injury last season, there is hope for the raw edge rusher who tallied 11.0 sacks a season ago at Michigan.
37. Houston Texans – Christian Watson, 6’4”, 208lbs, WR, North Dakota State
04/07/22 - David Ojabo, OLB, Michigan
Texans have little depth at WR beyond Brandin Cooks. Adding the FCS star would be huge. Watson has great size, big hands and 4.36 speed.
38. New York Jets (from Carolina) – Abraham Lucas, 6’6”, 315lbs, OT, Washington State
04/07/22 - Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State
The Jets need a RT to push George Fant for playing time and Lucas, a three-year starter for the Coogs, is a technician at RT who excels in pass protection.
39. Chicago Bears – Tyler Smith, 6’5”, ,324lbs, OT, Tulsa, Jr.
04/07/22 - George Pickens, WR, Georgia
The Bears need to continue to address the OL to protect Justin Fields. Teven Jenkins and Larry Borom appear to be set at OT for now. I think adding a player like Smith who has a future at OT at the next level, but may see his first action on the field at OG makes a lot of sense.
40. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver) – Nakobe Dean, 5’11”, 229lbs, ILB, Georgia, Jr.
04/07/22 - Nakobe Dean ILB, Georgia
Seattle lost Bobby Wagner in free agency to the Rams, so adding an inside backer is a must. Dean was the leader of the dominant Dawgs defense and not only has the range to play sideline to sideline but was the best blitzing ILB in the FBS and has a high football IQ. A borderline 1st Rounder whose lack of size pushed him down to Round 2.
41. Seattle Seahawks –Bernhard Raimann, 6’6”, 303lbs, OT, Central Michigan
04/07/22 - Arnold Ebiketie, DE, Penn State
Duane Brown is still unsigned at LT and even if he is brought back, he's 36 years of age, so Seattle has to have a long-term strategy at the position. The big Austrian first fell in love with football as an exchange student to America. After he wrapped up is mandatory military duty. Raimann enrolled at CMU as a 245-pound TE. After adding the weight and enlisting the tutelage of legendary OL coach Paul Alexander, Raimann has quickly developed into a technician at OT. He'll need some time to adjust given his relative inexperience at the position, but his growth in such a short time as been off the charts.
42. Indianapolis Colts (from Washington) – Sam Howell, 6’1”, 218lbs, QB, North Carolina, Jr.
04/07/22 - Skyy Moore, WR, Western Michigan
The Colts are without a 1st Round pick, so you have to expect Day 2 to be the time for Indy look offense here. If they don't target a WR like Skyy Moore to pair with Michael Pittman, Jr. at this spot, then the Colts likely will target a QB of the future who can learn behind Matt Ryan before taking over. Howell throws the best deep ball in this year's class and after a phenomenal sophomore season, he struggled to build rapport with a new set of skill players, which resulted in Howell showcasing his ability to make plays with his feet, having racked up 828 yards on the ground to go along with 3,056 passing yards.
43. Atlanta Falcons –Matt Corral, 6’2”, 212lbs, QB, Ole Miss, Jr.
04/07/22 - Christian Watson, WR, North Dakota State
Atlanta may have missed out on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes, but make no mistake about it, the Falcons have to address the QB position in the draft. Marcus Mariota is a familiar face for Arthur Smith, so he feels like the perfect bridge QB. If ATL decides not to target local talent Malik Willis in Round One, they could opt for one of the more dynamic QB's in Round 2 in Corral.
44. Cleveland Browns – Travis Jones, 6’4”, 325lbs, NT, Connecticut
04/07/22 - Travis Jones, NT, Connecticut
Cleveland has a huge need at DT and Jones has been rising up draft boards. A hulking presence along the interior of the line, Jones is able to collapse the pocket with his brute strength, but also has quick, nimble feet and has a motor that won't quit. A freakish athlete who ran a 4.92 40 at the Combine, Jones spends a lot of time in opposing backfields (8.5 sacks, 19.0 TFL in his career) and would be a nice complement to Myles Garrett.
45. Baltimore Ravens – Leo Chenal, 6’3”, 250lbs, LB, Wisconsin, Jr.
04/07/22 - Dylan Parham, OC, Memphis
The Ravens need an ILB to pair with Patrick Queen and
Chenal has a rare blend of speed, strength and explosiveness, having logged a 4.53 40 and a 40.5-inch vertical leap at the Combine and has put up a 420-pound bench press. He's a thumper coming downhill, but also has the required athleticism to get outside and behind the line of scrimmage, having racked up 115 tackles and 18 TFL in 2021 alone. Chenal is also a top tier blitzer at the ILB position, having racked up 8.0 sacks for the Badgers this past season.
46. Minnesota Vikings – Kyler Gordon, 5’11”, 194lbs, CB, Washington, Jr.
04/07/22 - Jalen Pitre, S, Baylor
The Vikings re-signed Patrick Peterson and have Cam Dantzler who took a step forward a season ago, but that shouldn't stop them from taking a CB on the first two days of the draft. If they don't go Derek Stingley, Jr. at No. 12, they can land Gordon who plays bigger than his size and will take his 42.5-inch vertical leap with him to make plays on the outside and over the middle.
47. Washington Commanders (from Indianapolis) - George Pickens, 6’3”, 199lbs, WR, Georgia, Jr.
04/07/22 - Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State
Washington has to get help for Carson Wentz and Terry McLaurin at the WR position. If the Commanders don't target Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams or Chris Olave in Round One, I expect this pick to be used on the best WR available. Pickens was once seen as a 1st Round lock until an ACL tear last spring took away much of his junior season. Pickens appears to be healthy now and will be a threat down the field and in the red zone for Wentz.
48. Chicago Bears (from LA Chargers) – Logan Hall, 6’6”, 283lbs, DT, Houston
04/07/22 - Roger McCreary, CB, Auburn
The Bears continue their focus in the trenches by looking for a D-lineman to fill the void up front with Akiem Hicks not on the roster. Hall is scheme-versatile and can push the pocket as an interior pass rusher.
49. New Orleans Saints – Skyy Moore, 5’10”, 195lbs, WR, Western Michigan
04/07/22 - Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington
The Saints' passing attack suffered mightily when Michael Thomas wasn't able to get on the field. Adding another weapon in the WR room has to be a priority. If the Saints don't target a WR in Round 1, Moore would be a good fit on Day 2. Moore is a smooth route runner who is sudden out of his breaks to create separation and his 4.41 speed was a bit faster than expected. He can be a nice weapon to pair with Thomas.
50. Kansas City Chiefs (from Miami) – John Metchie, 5’11”, 187lbs, WR, Alabama, Jr.
04/07/22 - Lewis Cine, S, Georgia
Even with the additions of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdez-Scantling, KC must address the WR position early in the draft to replace the speed of Tyreek Hill. Enter John Metchie, who appears to be ahead of schedule in his rehab from an ACL tear during the season. Metchie is sudden in his route running and has the speed to be a true vertical threat.
51. Philadelphia Eagles – Jalen Pitre, 5’11”, 198lbs, S, Baylor, Jr.
04/07/22 - Cameron Thomas, DE, San Diego State
The Eagles will be looking for a ballhawking safety to pair with Anthony Harris. Pitre reminds me a lot of Tyrann Mathieu in his ability to make plays all over the field. He's a force coming downhill and making plays behind the line of scrimmage, but he has to make sure he plays under control.
52. Pittsburgh Steelers – Jalen Tolbert, 6’1”, 194lbs, WR, South Alabama
04/07/22 - Bernhard Raimann, OT, Central Michigan
The Steelers lost JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington in free agency, meaning Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson will be the primary pass catchers. I expect Pittsburgh to target a WR early to provide additional weapons for whoever is under center. Tolbert is a big-bodied WR who has legit vertical speed. He and Claypool can attack the outside, while Johnson handles the slot.
53. Green Bay Packers (from Las Vegas) – Trey McBride, 6’4”, 246lbs, TE, Colorado State
04/07/22 - Daniel Faalele, OT, Minnesota
The Packers should be finding more weapons for Aaron Rodgers and I expect them to target the draft's top TE and reigning John Mackey Award winner. McBride caught 90 balls for 1,121 yards this past season and would give ARod a legitimate weapon at TE.
54. New England Patriots – Roger McCreary, 5’11”, 190lbs, CB, Auburn
04/07/22 - Sean Rhyan, OG, UCLA
The Patriots will be looking to replace JC Jackson and while McCreary lacks ideal length for the CB position, he was incredibly productive for the Tigers (6 Int., 30 PBU in his career).
55. Arizona Cardinals – Drake Jackson, 6’3”, 254lbs, LB, USC, Jr.
04/07/22 - Darian Kinnard, OG, Kentucky
The loss of Chandler Jones was a major blow to the defense as he accounted for 26% of the team's 41 sacks a season ago. Drake Jackson is an athletic edge rusher who was often asked to drop in coverage this past season, so he didn't get quite the reps we would have expected with the ability to put the kind of pressure on the QB that he can. Jackson has a quick get-off and can bend and dip that inside shoulder to turn the corner in a hurry. He's relentless in his pursuit of the QB as well. What you did see with Jackson dropping in coverage was the ability to change directions quickly and make athletic plays on the football, which showcased some versatility. He's going to need to develop a wider array of pass rush moves, especially counters when his initial rush has been stifled. That said, Jackson would be a nice complement to Markus Golden out of the gate and if he can continue to develop his game, could be a sleeper on Day 2.
56. Dallas Cowboys – Cameron Thomas, 6’4”, 267lbs, DE, San Diego State
04/07/22 - Sam Williams, DE, Mississippi
Even with the addition of Dante Fowler, Jr., the Cowboys must find additional edge rushers to help Demarcus Lawrence put pressure on the QB. Thomas is one of the more underrated DE's in the entire draft. He has exceptionally quick and violent hands at the point of attack, does a tremendous job slipping blocks and uses an array of counter moves to get into the backfield. His 10.5 sacks and 20 TFL are proof he was disruptive all season long in opposing backfields, but then you also have to take into account the fact that he was second in the FBS in QB pressures. His motor and effort will be a welcome addition up front in Dallas.
57. Buffalo Bills –Coby Bryant, 6’1”, 193lbs, CB, Cincinnati
04/07/22 - Calvin Austin, WR, Memphis
The Bills need to target a corner early to replace the departed Levi Wallace alongside Tre'Davious White. Bryant, the Jim Thorpe Award winner, has good size, excellent ball skills and can be a factor in press and off coverage.
58. Atlanta Falcons (from Tennessee) – Nik Bonitto, 6’3”, 248lbs, OLB, Oklahoma, Jr.
04/07/22 - John Metchie, WR, Alabama
After finishing the 2021 season with a whopping 18 sacks, the Falcons must target at least one edge rusher, and it wouldn't surprise me if they double up on the position. Bonitto is explosive coming off the edge and his win rate is among the best in the FBS and he racked up 19.5 sacks in his career with the Sooners. Bonitto's ability to get up the field in a hurry will also impact Atlanta's run defense.
59. Green Bay Packers – DeMarvin Leal, 6’4”, 283lbs, DE/DT, Texas A&M, Jr.
04/07/22 - Myjai Sanders, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
Green bay came into the offseason needing to get help for Kenny Clark up front and even with the signing of Jarran Reed, I feel like they're not done yet. Leal was once thought of as a 1st Round pick, but he still offers the ability to get after the passer as an interior pass rusher, having racked up 8.5 sacks for the Aggies this past season.
60. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Phidarian Mathis, 6’4”, 310lbs, DT, Alabama
04/07/22 - DeMarvin Leal, 6’4”, 283lbs, DT, Texas A&M, Jr.
Ndamukong Suh is still a free agent and even if he's re-signed, I expect the Bucs to think about a more long-term option up front. Mathis is a high energy player who can get to the QB from the interior of the line, having racked up 9.0 sacks a season ago. Any time you put on tape of the Bama defense, # 48 was always flashing in opponents' backfield.
61. San Francisco 49ers – Alec Pierce, 6’3”, 211lbs, WR, Cincinnati
04/07/22 - Amare Barno 6’5”, 246lbs, DE, Virginia Tech
Deebo Samuel made it clear he wanted out of San Francisco, so the Niners will have to figure out how to replace his production. Pierce has legit 4.4 speed to be a vertical threat and his 40.5-inch vertical leap allows him to outleap corners on 50-50 balls. With a career 17.5 yard-per-catch-average, Pierce will be an explosive deep threat.
62. Kansas City Chiefs – Devonte Wyatt, 6’3”, 304lbs, DT, Georgia, Jr.
04/07/22 - Logan Hall, 6’6”, 283lbs, DT, Houston
Jarran Reed is gone, so the Chiefs will need to find his replacement next to Chris Jones. Wyatt is an athletic freak, having run a 4.77 40 at the Combine. He's quick to penetrate the line of scrimmage with his burst off the ball and plays with a relentless motor. Wyatt was poised to be a 1st Round pick until character concerns surfaced. Some teams removed him from their draft boards, but KC has the required veteran head coach in Andy Reid and the leadership in the locker room required to take a chance.
63. Cincinnati Bengals – Perrion Winfrey, DT, Oklahoma
04/07/22 - Perrion Winfrey, 6’4”, 290lbs, DT, Oklahoma
The loss of Larry Ogunjobi up front has made the DT position a key need heading into the draft. Winfrey showed flashes of brilliance with a quick first step and a relentless attitude getting after the QB, but his play was inconsistent. His stock skyrocketed at the Senior Bowl as he was named the MVP after he was virtually unblockable, leading many to draw the conclusion that Winfrey had been playing out of position during his time at OU.
64. Denver Broncos (from LA Rams) – Kenneth Walker III, 5’9”, 211lbs, RB, Michigan State, Jr.
04/07/22 - Kenneth Walker III, RB, Michigan State
Denver addressed the need at RB by re-signing Melvin Gordon, though it was just a one-year deal. The Broncos need to add another back who can offer a 1-2 punch with Javonte Williams into the future. Kenneth Walker III was seen as a late Day 3 pick while at Wake Forest, but he transferred to Michigan State prior to the 2021 season and he went on to rush for 1,636 yards and scored 18 TD, numbers good enough for him to finish 8th in the Heisman voting. Walker III is known for his contact balance, vision and body control, but his 4.38 40 time showed he has much more juice than many were expecting. He'll need to show he can be a weapon in the passing game, but his ability to make plays between the tackles and on the perimeter will get him drafted at the end of Round 2.
